THE MADRAS CENTRAL JAIL A.K.A MADRAS PENITENTIARY CIRCA 1837

The British Government brought with them the Jail system and set up various prisons in India to curb the rise of the Indian National Movement. Lord Macaulay, a member of the Indian Law Commission, initiated the Prison reform in 1835. The Indian Prisons Act of 1894 regulated the prison system in the country. One such prison was the Madras Penitentiary circa 1837, which used to house transit convicts.
